Poison Control
If you've read Daisy's page, you know that we've had a lot of
experience calling poison control over the years, so we were very
surprised to learn that there's a separate number specifically for pets:
(800) 548-2423. When you call, you'll get a message that there's a $50
charge for each call. I've had to call this number twice. The first
time, Daisy ate a bottle of prescription pain medication specifically
for pets. They definitely earned the $50 dollars in this case. They put
us in touch with an on-call vet who told us to take Daisy to the 24-hour
emergency vet. He gave us a direct number where we could reach him once
we got there. He worked with the doctor at the emergency vet on the
recommended treatment plan. He stayed in touch until she was out of the
woods. The second time, Toby ate a piece of nicotine gum. We called
and they told us what to watch out for, but generally said he'd be fine.
They didn't charge us in this case. From what I gather, they only charge
the $50 if it's serious and will require that a specialist work with
your doctor through the emergency. Well worth the phone call.
